I was working on a paper about land reform when I came across this book。 I thought the title was very catchy, so I decided to read this short story。 How much land does a man need? Well, just enough to be buried in。

First look into Tolstoy and the man can write! It was a pleasant short read that you can finish in one sitting。 I really liked the second story。 I’m curious and looking forward to his other works but I’m also nervous because he usually writes WAY more haha

A cautionary tale of envy and greed。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Generally I really enjoyed both of these short stories but for some reason I like the one about the shoe maker way more compared to the one with the devil I guess I am one of those guys who prefer a story with hope more than a cautionary tale。 Generally both stories should be read by anyone as it is just that great。

A moral tale of greed and not being content with what you have。 The question is how much land does a man NEED not how much land does a man WANT。 The ending was brilliant but predictable。

How Much Land Does a Man Need?A parable of a peasant farmer, always dissatisfied with the size of his land and constantly searching for greater profits, who is eventually overcome by his greedy ambition。 A timeless short story。 Clearly, human nature hasn't changed since 1886。 4 stars。What Men Live ByA Christian story of learning to live as God intended。 Perhaps because I'm not religious, this story didn't feel relevant in the same way as How Much Land Does a Man Need?。 I could appreciate the wri How Much Land Does a Man Need?A parable of a peasant farmer, always dissatisfied with the size of his land and constantly searching for greater profits, who is eventually overcome by his greedy ambition。 A timeless short story。 Clearly, human nature hasn't changed since 1886。 4 stars。What Men Live ByA Christian story of learning to live as God intended。 Perhaps because I'm not religious, this story didn't feel relevant in the same way as How Much Land Does a Man Need?。 I could appreciate the writing style, but the core message is not something that resonates personally。 2 stars。 。。。more

The second short story was much more up my alley。 If the book was made up of this last story alone, I would give it 5 stars, but because of the first one, I'll settle for 4 stars。 The second short story was much more up my alley。 If the book was made up of this last story alone, I would give it 5 stars, but because of the first one, I'll settle for 4 stars。 。。。more

One of the finest pieces I have read in the collection。 Absolutely classic, moralistic and beautiful。 Two tales of greed, love and faith。

this took me a while to get through which is surprising because it's only around 50 pages。what i enjoyed was the overall plots of the stories and what they had to say about people。 i think what i struggled with is the way they were told, particularly the first one。 i felt like they were much too long at points, meandering for no reason because these stories are essentially parables so getting to know the characters isn't very important。i liked the second story more than the first but i will say this took me a while to get through which is surprising because it's only around 50 pages。what i enjoyed was the overall plots of the stories and what they had to say about people。 i think what i struggled with is the way they were told, particularly the first one。 i felt like they were much too long at points, meandering for no reason because these stories are essentially parables so getting to know the characters isn't very important。i liked the second story more than the first but i will say that i think both stories have fairly flat representations of working class people and the overall morals of both is pretty wishy washy。 。。。more

My first taste of Tolstoy through books and I’m just blown away by the themes and stories。 This short book has two short stories and I honestly think its a great place to start on your Tolstoy journey。 I’m so very excited to read another piece by Tolstoy to really understand his writing style and more about Russian culture。 I feel some excited book days ahead。
